Can I replace a magnetic ballast with an electronic ballast?

We have a 4-lamp magnetic ballast that is on the blink. The ballast is a Mark
III Energy Saver made by Advance Transformer, catalog number R-4S40-A-TP-AC.

This ballast is a magnetic ballast and costs $60 to replace. I can buy a 4-lamp
electronic ballast from Lowe's for $30.

Is it possible to swap the bad magnetic ballast with an electronic ballast? If
so, are there any modifications that I need to make to the 4' fixture?

Yes you can swap. The wiring is different. Just follow the diagram on the
new ballast, and you'll be good to go.

Your options..

1) Replace the ballast with the same model - $40 to $60 (bulbs.com - about
$40)

2) Replace the ballast with two duel lamp ballasts - $24 to $32
Cheapest initial cost. Typical duel lamp magnetic ballast + 40W lamps will
provide about 12,000 lumens for all four lamps.

3) Replace the ballast with an electronic one and new T8 lamps - about $30 +
lamps. Slightly higher up-front cost, but more efficiant. Will payback in
energy savings. Typical electronic ballast and T8 lamps will provide about
10,000 lumens for all four lamps.

I'm not sure I understand JM's comment. If you replace the EM ballast
with an electronic rapid start ballast the wiring should be the same.
